US television personality Rachel Maddow was amongst this year’s winners of the $625,000 MacArthur Fellowships.
The Geniuses follow this year’s 482 from 2018, and previous recipients include Keatsia Brooks, who secured her fellowship for studying songbirds at Virginia Tech, and the Smithsonian grant-winner author Derrick Jensen.
Alongside Maddow, the notable winners from the 34 US states, Puerto Rico and the Northern Mariana Islands are Bill Clinton’s former communications director Lisa Caputo, who served as part of Hillary Clinton’s campaign team, and scholar and actor Joseph DeFrancisco.
Marymartha Norwood, an American poet who studied at Wesleyan University and Rhodes College, placed third on the list of nominees.
Established in 1981, the fellowship grants are awarded to people under 40 for exemplary creative work. Some fellows spend their fellowship money supporting social change, to perform arts and culture, or for their work on environmental issues. In addition to funding their recipients, the MacArthur Foundation contributes $500,000 annually to each fellow’s institution.
